The Days of Our Youth

Youth is the time in our lives when our strength is at full capacity and we are capable of doing anything. This time lies between two periods of infirmity—childhood and old age. It is the period of transition from the dependence of childhood to adulthood’s independence. It is the power of the spirit that refuses to succumb to complacency and strives ever forward. A period where we are fearless and reckless. A time where we have no worries and regrets. An age where we call ourselves young adults.

Every day of our youth is memorable. We ought to cherish and treasure it. We should enjoy it because we will never be younger than we are at this very moment. It is the age of the good life. A carefree life. “Youth is the gift of nature” according to Stanislaw Jerzy Lec. A gift from nature, something to be acknowledged and valued. Each breath we take in our youth is a breath of freedom and happiness. We taste joy like no one else. It is the symbol of energy, strength and happiness. Because we are young, we are torn between a world of hate and a world of dreams. We have so much to lose and so much to gain. So much to love and so much to hate. So much to fight for and so much to change. Each step is a step taken to touch lives. Who we are and who we want to be is decided in our youth. We find out who we truly are. We carve an identity for ourselves.

Sometimes we don’t understand the power of the tool we hold. We take it for granted or we underestimate it. Great people have understood the value it holds. “Youth is the only thing worth having. When I find that I am growing old I shall kill myself” says Oscar Wilde. So let’s start valuing it too.

Dreams are an important part of youth. All our dreams start from this period. We dream big dreams, like lighthouses guiding the lost ships of our souls in the ocean of life. “Keep true to the dreams of your youth,” Friedrich von Schiller reminds us. We fight for our dreams. Accomplishing our dreams or carrying forward is not as easy as it sounds, but we find the strength to fight for our dreams and those of the others. “Worse than not realising the dreams of your youth, would be to have been young and never dreamed at all.” concludes Jean Genet.“If you can dream it, you can do it.” adds Walt Disney. So let’s never give up on our dreams and work hard to pursue it as we have a huge advantage of being young.

Being young doesn’t mean making ourselves happy at the expense of others. We are the future. The fate of the world lies in our hands. We should make it a better place to live in, not destroy it. After all, Mandela has proclaimed, “The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow.” A huge sense of responsibility lies in front of us.

“The youth is the hope of our future.” We are the hope to the lost. The cure to the disease. The light in the tunnel. The solutions to all the problems prevailing in the world. But are we willing to be the hope, the cure, the light and the solution? This a question for which we alone hold the answer.
